If you’re a business owner, entrepreneur, or balancing a professional life, you know how exhausting, overwhelming, and downright stressful running a business can be. Add in being a parent, a spouse, or simply a person with additional responsibilities, and sometimes it feels like the weight of it all is pressing down on your shoulders.

I know that feeling well—I’ve been there (and, honestly, I still find myself there sometimes). For the longest time, I struggled to understand why I constantly felt drained. Then it hit me: I never made time for a hobby.

Since the start of my virtual assistant business—and even during my corporate career—my dad always told me, “You need an outlet. You need to find a hobby outside of being responsible.” And every time, I’d say, “You’re right, Dad. I really should.” But I never did.

I kept pushing forward, thinking I didn’t have time for anything outside of work and family. Then, as my business grew and I juggled life as a Mompreneur, burnout hit me like a ton of bricks.

What is Burnout?

According to Google, burnout is a state of physical or mental exhaustion caused by overwork or stress. But it’s not just one-size-fits-all. The Harvard Business Review identifies three types of burnout:

  • Overload Burnout – When you work harder and more frantically to achieve success, often at the expense of your health and personal life.
  • Under-Challenged Burnout – Yes, burnout can also come from doing too little or feeling bored and unstimulated.
  • Neglect Burnout – Also called “worn-out” burnout, this happens when you feel helpless in the face of ongoing challenges.

I definitely fall into the Overload Burnout category. But I’ve been making an intentional effort to step out of that cycle and bring more balance into my life. One of the biggest changes? Prioritizing hobbies.

Here are a few hobbies I’ve embraced that have helped me limit burnout and reclaim some joy in my daily routine.

1. Coloring & Drawing

I started experimenting with Procreate, and let me tell you—I cannot put it down! Every weekend, I grab my iPad, freehand some designs, or follow a tutorial to learn something new. During the week, I save ideas so I can come back to them when I have downtime. It’s a simple, creative escape that I genuinely look forward to.

2. Growing Plants & Indoor Gardening

My grandmother always had beautiful, thriving plants. One day, I asked her about them, and she gifted me a small root. Since then, I’ve been obsessed with growing plants. They remind me that good things take time and that there’s beauty in slow growth. Plus, naming them (mine are Charlotte, Savannah, and Fiona) and placing them in stylish pots makes my workspace feel fresh and vibrant.

3. Crafting & DIY Projects

I’m a crafter at heart. I love creating, whether it’s stickers, paper projects, or DIY gifts. My Silhouette machine has been my go-to tool for years, and I’ve made everything from greeting cards to custom stickers. Crafting lets me flex my creativity, make things I actually use, and even create thoughtful gifts for others.

4. Getting Active

Okay, full honesty—this hobby ranks last on my list, lol. But I can’t deny that going for walks or challenging myself to beat my step goal on my Apple Watch has been rewarding. There’s something oddly satisfying about that little vibration and red ring notification telling me I hit my goal. It also reminds me to be intentional about movement when I spend so much time in front of a computer.

5. Self-Care

When in doubt, self-care it out. Whether it’s a massage, a manicure, a new hairstyle, a nap, reading a book, or just unplugging for a bit—taking care of yourself isn’t a luxury, it’s a necessity. You can’t pour from an empty cup.

Find Your Hobby, Protect Your Peace

As entrepreneurs, it’s easy to get lost in the hustle. But having a hobby—even a small one—can help prevent burnout and bring more joy into your daily routine. So, what’s your hobby? If you don’t have one yet, maybe it’s time to find one. Your future self will thank you for it.
